Transformer Restoration and Replacement
New Spare Transformer – Substation#121
Bells Mill Road, Rockville, MD
Realtime provided the civil, structural, and electrical engineering for the placement of a new spare 224MVA transformer (230/138kV). The scope also included design for the installation of a new foundation, oil containment system, and AC service with alarms to the new spare transformer.
Transformer #3 Restoration – Substation#185
Central Avenue, Capitol Heights, MD
On 9/24/13, the #3 Transformer at Central Avenue Substation failed catastrophically. The event resulted in a fire that caused damage to the existing steel supports, cable, cable trays, high-side switch, transformer, and station service transformer. Realtime provided civil and structural engineering and design for the replacement of the 69kV support steel on the high-speed ground switch and plates on the terminal structure. The scope included new cross members for the high-side switch service transformer, along with the evaluation and calculation of the existing transformer foundation and oil containment, to determine if it was suitable for reuse in placing a new 30MVA transformer.
